NY State Seat Belt Law

Top NY Auto Injury LawyersThe New York State Seat Belt Law makes it mandatory that all passengers in the front seats of a motor vehicle must wear safety belts at all times. Furthermore, this law applies to children under 16 who ride in any part of the car, including the rear seats. To ensure that everyone is following these laws, police officers may pull over drivers and issue tickets if they are found to be not complying. Additionally, failure to wear a seat belt can also increase insurance premiums. If you need a better understanding and want to hear opinions from top NY auto injury lawyers, we suggest contacting Winkler Kurtz, LLP, for your free consultation.

When was the NYS seat belt law passed?

The New York State Seat Belt Law was passed in 1984. It has been amended several times over the years. The most recent amendment occurred in 2019, prohibiting all children under two from riding without a child safety seat or booster seat. This law is just one of many initiatives the state takes to promote safety on the road and ensure all passengers are adequately secured at all times.

The law also incentivizes the use of safety belts by rewarding people for wearing them with a potential reduction in their vehicle insurance premiums. By following the guidelines of this law, drivers can avoid costly tickets and keep themselves and their passengers safe on the road.

To ensure compliance, police officers have the right to pull drivers over and issue tickets if they are found to be not wearing their seat belts. Additionally, parents should always ensure that children in their car are appropriately secured with an appropriate child safety seat or booster seat according to age and size.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) encourages all drivers and passengers to buckle up for safety whenever they enter a vehicle. Wearing a seat belt can save lives and reduce the risk of injury in an accident, so it is important to always remember to wear one. If you’re injured in an accident, we recommend you contact the top NY auto injury lawyers at Winkler Kurtz, LLP.

Other safety precautions, such as avoiding distracted driving, never driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and practicing defensive driving techniques, are also strongly recommended by the DMV.

The New York State Seat Belt Law is in place to keep everyone safe, so it is essential to follow the law and always wear a seat belt for your protection. Doing so will help reduce the risk of severe injury or even death if an accident occurs. Make sure you and all passengers are buckled up before taking off on any trip!

These laws apply to all motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, and motorcycles. It is important to note that these laws also apply to rental autos. So whether you’re renting a car for vacation or business travel, make sure everyone is buckled up before taking off.

Who is exempt from wearing a seatbelt in NY?

New York State’s Seat Belt Law does not require passengers over 16 to wear a seat belt in the rear seats. Additionally, some medical conditions may exempt individuals from wearing a seatbelt if they have been certified by their physician or surgeon. Examples include those with a disability that prevents them from using a standard safety belt and those with a condition that requires them to stay upright at all times.

Remember: The New York State Seat Belt Law is in place to keep everyone safe, so make sure you and your passengers are always buckled up. Doing so will help reduce the risk of severe injury or even death if an accident occurs. Contact Winkler Kurtz today for more tips and information from the top NY auto injury lawyers.
